South Carolina Fishing
Travel destination review
“Sport fishing” is usually not a term that people tend to associate with certain states, such as South Carolina. For this reason, the fishing enthusiast looking for opportunities for saltwater fishing may not even THINK of checking out South Carolina when planning the next fishing trip. Well, that needs to change right now.
South Carolina does have some famous beaches and islands. However, there are some lesser-known but still very accessible areas where sport-fishing opportunities are available. These places offer not only saltwater fishing from beaches and bays, but also fishing in freshwater creeks and inlets. In South Carolina, the southern flounder, speckled trout, bluefish, and redfish are only a few of the species of fish that can be caught during a saltwater fishing excursion, as well as Spanish mackerel and kingfish. One can choose to stand in the pounding surf or venture out just a few miles from shore and cast out into the ocean to try their luck at catching one of these fish.
This type of “inshore fishing” allows one to use light tackle as well as any inshore fishing method such as bottom fishing, trolling, and jigging. Other areas of South Carolina boast both river fishing and access to the Atlantic Ocean in the same area. The fishing enthusiast can pick and choose a different type of fishing experience every day. Because it offers river and ocean fishing, South Carolina is home to such freshwater and “brackish” (a mixture of salt and fresh water) water species such as the star drum, Atlantic croaker, and bay anchovy. A species of catfish known as the flathead has also made its home in South Carolina. The fishing enthusiast who enjoys fly-fishing will find this method especially useful when their goal is to catch as many trout and redfish as they possibly can. The same inshore fishing methods that were mentioned in a previous paragraph also work well in the Edisto River.
Charter fishing excursions are your best bet when looking into sport fishing trips. However, South Carolina has over 200 miles of beach shoreline. So, think about it. Somewhere in that 200 miles there are going to be some fishing charters available.
