Fishing in Florida's Islamorada

Islamorada fishing expeditions are very popular since its geographical features make it home to many species of sought after fish. Located in the Florida Keys, this island is just as popular for angling as it is for sightseeing. Three short miles off its southern coast lay a reef where snapper and grouper are plentiful. Need more adventure? Head out a bit further to swordfish and marlin territory. While you’re fishing, take in the sight of playful dolphins and birds who have gathered to enjoy feeding in the tepid area waters. The northern shores of the island are home to cobia, kings, tarpon, and bonefish. Travel further into the Everglades to hunt redfish and snook.

Islamorada’s geological makeup creates a paradise for maneuvering small boats. Purchase bait from one of its many coastal marinas and begin your adventure. Add to your excursion by fishing for bait on the coast and using it further out in the water. You don’t have to travel many miles to be in big fish territory. Though some popular destinations around Islamorada are prone to high winds, there are plenty of areas to explore. You could easily spend several days fishing these waters without experiencing it all.

Prepare yourself for excitement of hunting for big fish; once you throw the chum into the water, you’ll be bombarded with birds from above and your hunt from below. This display of biodiversity will vary depending on the season. Blacktip, mackerel, king, and sharks weighing up to 400 pounds regularly dart through the waters, providing plenty of rod bending, line bending hunting excitement. Big fish put up a fight when hooked, so get ready to rumble.

Islamorada, which means “purple island” in Spanish was named for the purple flowers that were once plentiful there. Its proximity to the Bahamas and the way the current passes around its shores make it an incredible fishing destination. Those looking for wrecks and permit fishing should head to Key West. However, these areas are so close to one another that the vacation angler should try them both. Friendly guides, gorgeous scenery, playful wildlife, and two very different off coast angling experiences make Islamorada fishing a must for those seeking big-fish action. Its native species are too numerous to mention, whether you seek to negotiate small channels or pass the continental shelf for high adventure. Take advantage of what the Gulf Stream brings your way!
