Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Fishing & Travel Destination

OK, so you like fishing but the rest of the family would rather lie on the beach or play in the ocean?  Don’t worry; everyone can have his or her wish in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. You may be thinking, “What?  There’s places besides Florida that offer sport fishing AND family activities?”  The answer is yes!  South Carolina offers just as many things to do as any of the beaches in Florida.  And, depending on where you live, it may be closer for you to drive to one of South Carolina’s beaches than to Florida. Myrtle Beach, located on South Carolina’s Atlantic Ocean coastline, is known for its great fishing.  So, while the family goes to one of the many beautiful beaches that are available, you can take advantage of one of the many fishing charters that are available.

Pier fishing is very common in Myrtle Beach.  This type of inshore fishing (so called because although the piers extend out into the ocean, it is different than offshore or “deep sea” fishing) allows you to use light tackle when fishing for bluefish, Spanish mackerel, or  red drum (also known as redfish). Pier fishing is an excellent place to practice your bottom fishing, as most of the fish that “hang around” piers stay close to the ocean floor.  There are those who own or operate bait and tackle shops on or near the pier who will be glad to tell you what size weight you need to have the best success. If you prefer light tackle fishing, but want to try your hand somewhere else besides a pier, there are actually fishing charters available that specialize in this type of fishing.  Booking one of these will allow you to fish one of the many backwater creeks that are located in or near Myrtle Beach.

The adventurous fisher who wants to experience saltwater fishing at its best, however, will find many opportunities to book fishing excursions on offshore or “deep sea” fishing charters.  Here you will use methods such as trolling or kite fishing to catch such species as Black sea bass, snapper, grouper, larger sea bass, trigger, dolphin (also known as Mahi-Mahi), Wahoo, and king mackerel.

No matter which type of fishing you prefer, you can find it at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  A little research is all it takes to find your perfect fishing trip.
