St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Fishing & Travel Destination

St. Thomas is best known as the Blue Marlin capital of the world, and fishing for this large and challenging game is definitely the primary attraction for sportsmen and women all across the globe.  But don't let that stop you from visiting other attractions on this 32 square mile tropical paradise.  St. Thomas boasts everything from premiere hotels and accommodations to the finest dining, golf, tennis, boat charters, and a number of historical venues.  Take a guided tour of the island and explore winding hills and mountainous roads with breathtaking panoramic views.

Drake's Seat is a famous viewpoint where Sir Francis Drake once sat to keep tabs on his vast fleet of ships.  MountainTop is another must see: view the world from 1,500 feet above sea level, where you can dine and spend your vacation dollars at the festive shopping complex, with incredible views overlooking all three of the US Virgin Islands. If fishing is your main goal, look no further than St. Thomas.  There exist two major fishing spots on either end of the island: The North Drop and The South Drop.  The North Drop, located 20 miles north of the island, produces more Blue Marlin bites on a daily basis than any other place on the planet!  Between May and October, this is the premiere locale for catching the large, tough-as-nails fish.  During the months of high season, it is not unusual to get between five and ten Marlin strikes per day.  The most popular bait used for Marlin fishing is lures, Ballyhoo, Belly strips, and Mackerel. The South Drop, 8 miles south of St. Thomas, has warmer water coming in from the Caribbean Sea and sinks below 12,000 feet at the deepest point.  Here you are almost sure to catch Mahi Mahi, Kingfish, and Wahoo, among many others. Lures and feathers are the most popular form of bait here.

The Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club (VIGFC) is based on St. Thomas and schedules several annual fishing events and professional tournaments, including a Couples Valentines Tournament in February, the Dolphin Derby in April, and the Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament, a small boat tournament welcoming both adults and children.
